Maine

Known as the Pine Tree State, Maine is a forested state located in the northeastern part of the United States. The state derived its name from the ancient province of Maine in France, the first European country that settled in the region in 1604. Maine is also in the region known as New England, a region wherein English settlements were established during the age of exploration. To its north and northeast is New Brunswick, and to its northwest is Quebec. New Hampshire is to the southwest, while the Atlantic ocean is to its south and southwest. Maine was originally a prosperous annex territory of Massachusetts until the state was contended by opposing forces during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. It was eventually inducted as the 23rd state on the 15th of March 1820, as a component of the Missouri Compromise.

Today, there are more than 1.3 million people residing in Maine and indulging in its gift of nature. Its capital city is Augusta, but its largest city is Portland. Augusta only ranks as the 9th city in terms of population, while Portland ranks the first, a home to more than 65,000 Mainers. Second to the list is Lewiston City that has more than 35,000 residents, and followed by Bangor that has more than 31,000.
